Bellevue Bullies #2

Things are heating up for the Sinclair boys! With one already in the NHL, Jayden Sinclair is hoping to be next!

This has been the toughest year of my life. I watched my brother go into the draft without me, my mom got divorced, and the weight of my family’s issues is heavy on my shoulders. I feel like it’s my job to fix everything while working my butt off in school and trying to make my game better. I have to go into the draft. It will give my family the support they need, and it will prove that I’m good enough. But to get there, I have to show I can be the best captain for the Bellevue Bullies. The spot is mine—no one can take it. First though, Jude is making me go on a brother’s weekend. Innocent enough, I guess…until I see her. She’s the biggest competitor I’ve ever faced. Not only for my spot but also my heart. It’s hard to ignore someone like Baylor Moore.

***

I don’t lose. I can’t. My dad has bred me to be the best in anything I do. I am driven, I am smart, and I am going to be the first woman in the National Hockey League. No two ways about it. I’ve worked too hard. I’ve been through too much not to have what I want. I know I can do it. I will make my dad proud, and no one will stand in the way of that. That is, until I let him in. He scares me. He makes me feel. And he could very well be the one person who can make me want more than just to win.

We both have the same goal. Victory. But how do you compete against the person you want to win? It’s not easy. Love isn’t something you can control. It isn’t like a puck that can be handled by a stick. No, it has a mind of its own and does what it wants.

Neither of us saw it coming, and we really don’t know if there is a way to score, especially when you’re being Clipped by Love.

My Review: 5 Stars
I loved Jude Sinclair from Boarded by Love, but Jayden took over the top spot as my favorite Sinclair boy. He is sensitive, sweet, hard working, sexy, funny and doesn't take anything for granted. He has amazing skills on the ice (and off the ice *wink wink* LOL) but he works his butt off to keep them and improve them. He is not selfish, he encourages everyone on his team to be the best and off the ice he thinks with his head and heart, not his dick. He was just all around a great character. Baylor Moore was a hot mess. She was emotionally stunted because of past hurts, leaving her very closed off to personal relationships of any sort and very insecure but on the ice she couldn't be more confident. She is extremely attracted to Jayden, but threatened by his hockey skills and unsure of his pursuit of her. Jayden pursued her hardcore, but he did it subtlety. He knew when to press her and when to back off and let her come to him. With Jayden's leadership on the ice and his attention off the ice Baylor learned how to let people in and how to be more open. Jayden was a great character by himself, but Baylor brought out the best in him and he brought out the best in her. The book had just the right amount of drama, sexiness, humor and heart.  I really enjoyed this book and it definitely goes into my top two by Toni Aleo.

Excerpt

“Today for our team-building exercise, we are gonna run this five-mile course.”
Immediately people are groaning. Apparently, I’m not the only one who hates to run. He blows his whistle, and everyone snaps their mouths shut as Dad goes on, “I believe that running is not only great for your endurance but also it’s good for building a team. The whole no person left behind is something I live by. Push your brothers and sister, help them to finish, and remember this isn’t a race.”
Dad may say that, but when I glance up at Jayden, I see it in his eyes.
This is a race.
And he’s going down.
“We are to finish as a team. Don’t let me see someone finish by themselves,” he says and everyone nods. Blowing his whistle, he waves us off. “And go!”
I meet Jayden’s gaze, and then we are glaring at each other as we start to walk with the team to the start of the trail.
“Wager?”
I scoff. “You mean, what you’re gonna give me when I win?”
He nods dumbly at me before sarcastically saying, “Oh yeah, sure.”
“You’re carrying an extra fifty pounds easy. You can’t beat me.”
“Try me, princess.”
Glaring, because I’ve decided that is the most degrading thing you can call me, I say, “Fine, I win, you gotta buy me a big bottle of mustard for the house.”
Scrunching his face up in a perplexed look, he says, “Mustard?”
“Yes, it’s a favorite.”
He shakes his head. “Fine, but thankfully, I won’t have to give up the five bucks. But you will have to admit one thing to me that you would never admit to anyone else.”
Eyeing him, I ask, “Say what?”
He grins, his teeth flashing in the sun as he covers his eyes with a pair of Ray-Bans. “When I win, you have to admit something to me. Pretty cut-and-dried, Moore. Or what, are you too scared to do such a thing?”

Boarded by Love by Toni Aleo Review

Toni Aleo's spin off series from the Assassins is the Bellevue Bullies series. In the first book we meet the very hunky and very talented Sinclair brothers. Jude Sinclair is quite the lady's man until he comes across a certain redhead that I came to love in Breaking Away, Claire Anderson. I simply loved this book and have re-read it numerous times.

Blurb:
Jude Sinclair here, hockey player for the Bellevue Bullies and lover of all ladies. Hockey’s in my blood, and not to sound full of myself, but I’m good at it…really good. The draft is within my reach—it’s mine to take—but that’s not the only reason people know my name. They know me because of my way with women. They know the score, and I aim to please. I just tend to stay away from repeat performances. In other words, I don’t do relationships beyond my family and friends. I’m happy with life. However, I should warn you that my story and how I see it playing out is about to change due to a certain redhead on campus.

She’s beautiful. Stunning. Breathtaking.

She’s my game changer.

He’s trouble from the moment I see him. I don’t know what I’m thinking, but from the moment I meet his gaze, I’m his. It’s a scary feeling.

I’ve never trusted anyone outside my aunt and uncle—and even that took months. I didn’t have it easy growing up. My mom was usually strung out, and she didn’t give me a second thought. Drugs and the men who paid her were more important to her. It was horrible, but I’m stronger today. Because of my past, security is what I need most. Money assures me that I can take care of myself today, tomorrow, and next month. I don’t want to ever be hungry or go without again, so I work hard for every penny.

Oh, by the way, I’m Claire Anderson. I’m a hard-studying sophomore at the University of Bellevue, dancer for the school dance team, and a burlesque dancer at a club, but that’s my secret.
You may think you know how our story ends, but you have no clue. It’s not easy falling in love… or living happily ever after. At first it may seem so, but when is anything worth having ever won without a fight?

Especially when you’re boarded by love.

My Review: 5 Stars
I honestly couldn't tell you how many times I have read this book. I love it. Jude is a great character, he is cocky and confident but also amazingly sweet, funny and oh so loving. Claire has had a rough go of life and that has made her tough, but with Phillip and Reese's love she has opened her eyes to the fact that she can be more than the daughter of a drugged out stripper. Together, they have lots of sexy times, but under all the sexiness you can feel the love and tenderness they feel for each other. This book has just the right amount of drama, sexiness, fun, humor and heart.

Laces and Lace by Toni Aleo Review

So Laces and Lace by Toni Aleo, this book, it gets you in the feels. But before I get into that one I think we need to go back to their beginning. At about this time last year, Ms Toni and a few other authors published this great anthology called Seduced by the Game. It was comprised of 8 novellas and the proceeds went to Hockey Fights Cancer (yes they are all super cool for doing that). In this anthology there was Tangled in the Laces by Toni Aleo and here we meet Karson King and Lacey Martin.

Tangled in the Laces Blurb:
In Tangled in the Laces, Karson King is on the fast track to the NHL. Lacey Martin is coming back from a hard fight against cancer and is terrified of him but the attraction is too much to ignore. Soon their love is so intense, neither of them see the rest of their lives without the other. Will Karson prove that he will protect her heart at all costs, or will he leave Laceyto pick up the pieces of her life once again?

My Thoughts:
This novella was great. Lacey wants her life back after her battle with cancer, but has mental and physical scars from the fight. Karson is her brother's friend and relentless pursues her until she can't do anything but give into the attraction and chemistry she feels every time she is around him. Karson soothes the parts of her mind that thinks no man will ever find her attractive again after her battle with cancer. He is oh so loving, sweet and tender with her. Their relationship seems like there is no where for it to go but up. But then her father and brother have something different to say about that. It was a great novella that got me amped up to read Laces and Lace, I could hardly wait for it to come out after getting a preview of their story. So that leads us up to Laces and Lace.

Blurb:
Nine years ago, things were perfect. Lacey and Karson had found their happily ever after in each other…or so they thought. How do two people who were meant to be move on from that once-in-a-lifetime love?

Lacey has a strength inside her that comes alive with the things she’s most passionate about. She’s a fighter, a survivor, and has everything she’s ever wanted but the one thing that matters most—love.

Karson is doing the one thing he loves most—playing hockey for the Assassins, yet he knows regret. He knows his life has been missing the one thing he walked away from so many years ago—Lacey.

Nine years later, and neither has been able to succeed in moving on from what was, what could have been, and who each of their hearts still beats for. When a chance encounter during a fateful night has their paths crossing again, will the tether still attaching their souls allow them to face the past, present, and a possible future?

Can two people with fate on their side find a way back to each other? Overcome all the obstacles in their way to finally live life together to the fullest?

Or will they let those around them and the circumstances they face, along with questions and doubt, ruin a second chance at the life they both deserve?

My Review: 5 Stars
OMG, this book, just this book. So nine years later, Karson and Lacey randomly run into each other again. Neither of them have ever really moved on after their college breakup. Karson can't get passed the one that he let get away, he wishes he could take back what he did, even knowing that if he had he more than likely wouldn't have the career that he loves. Lacey can't move on from the man that she thought loved her as much as she loved him. Their random encounter leads them to trying to see if they can fit back together again. They try to form a life together even with her father trying his best to keep them apart. They still have all this love for each other, but they have to fight to get back their trust in each other.

I just loved this book. Karson regrets his actions with all his heart and would give anything just to get Lacey back. Lacey is a fighter when it comes to most things, but she is still fragile when it comes to the effects her cancer had on her heart and her body. This book got you in the feels, but it is also fun and sexy. Karson and Lacey just fit together, in the best way possible. I completely love the Assassin series and they just seem to keep on getting better and better.

Breaking Away by Toni Aleo Review

Blurb:
BREAKING AWAY is a story of loss, healing, and love… where unexpected turns and heartache lead to passion.

To Nashville Assassins’ leading scoring center Phillip Anderson, playing hockey has always been easy… as natural as breathing. His life is no different. That’s until his world is turned upside down by the death of his sister. While mourning his loss, Phillip has to find a way to make his very angry sixteen-year-old niece, Claire, happy. Now, as her guardian, he discovers the only thing that seems to heal her lonely heart is dance class. But what he didn’t count on was the attraction he’d feel towards her drop-dead sexy dance teacher.

For Reese Allen, dancing has always been part of her soul. After having her heart broken in New York, she comes home with the determination to make her dance studio one of the best in Tennessee and succeeds. When she sees Claire dance for the first time, she knows the girl is bound for greatness and takes the troubled teen under her wing. Using dance as therapy, she suddenly finds herself bound to the young woman… and her hot-as-sin uncle.

However, Phillip and Reese are happy in their single lives. It’s simple. They do what they want, who they want, and how they want, but from the moment they meet, the attraction is undeniable. Soon, they are more than willing to spend just one night tangled in the sheets. But, one night turns into two, and two turns into three, until they find themselves in a repeated dance of “One Last Time” that has the potential to be something more… if only Reese and Claire allow it.

Can Phillip find a way to thaw the hearts of both the women in his life, or will he be forever trying to break them away from their pasts?

My Review: 5 Stars
Breaking Away is the 5th book in the Assassin Series by Toni Aleo and oh my goodness I couldn’t get enough of this book. Phillip and Reese have played small parts in the previous books (Phillip being the party guy that likes to annoy Shea and is Erik’s best friend and Reese being Piper’s taller, b*tchy twin sister), but this book is all about them (and Phillip’s niece, Claire). You find out why Reese is so “cold” and you find out that really she is a very passionate person (not just about Phillip). She loves her family and will do anything in her power to help them. She loves dance, doing it, choreographing it, and teaching it, everything about dance (minus the crazy dance parents). She uses her passion for dance to help Phillip’s niece heal.

Phillip, it turns out isn’t just a party guy, always up for a good time. He is a guy that had a rough start and he worked hard to get away from it, but in his getting away he left someone behind, his young niece Claire. Since Phillip’s sister died towards the end of Blue Lines his aunt was taking care of Claire, but then he finds out that things aren’t so great so he gets Claire and brings her back to Nashville with him. When things finally get too bad Claire ends up moving in with Harper (you get to see most of the characters at some point in this book) while Phillip is on the road with the Assassins. This is where Reese first sees Claire dances and in having Claire join her studio what brings Phillip and Reese together.

From here on out there is a LOT of sexy times but also moments of tenderness and heartache. Reese helps Phillip with his niece, being an ear when he needs it and giving advice when he asks. Overall it is a really great story of overcoming past hurts and trusting that not everyone will let you down. I loved the interaction between Phillip and his niece. He really loves her and wants to be there for her, but she has been through a lot and feels like he left her when he should have helped get her out. The relationship they develop is beautiful and it was beautifully written. I love the push and pull of Phillip and Reese’s relationship. Their chemistry is off the charts but they also can talk to each other (most of the time). They both love fiercely but because of past issues have a hard time accepting love. I will say this book is a little (or a lot if you do the math) sexier than the previous books in the series. I’m pretty sure if I was as busy as them I would be exhausted, all the time. But it was written in true Toni Aleo style with the right amount of sass, wit, fun, sexy and heartfelt emotions that I have come to expect from her books. She is an author that always makes me feel (and I felt my heart break a few times). If you have read her books previously and loved them, you will love this one. If you haven’t read any of Ms. Toni’s books I highly recommend you pick them up.
